"The teachers talked about responsibility for imparting to students the knowledge and associated skills pertaining to various subject areas, such as math, English, and the sciences. But the teachers also mentioned a second type of responsibility that was somewhat less expected. This form of responsibility has to do with enabling students to realize their full potential and flourish, psychologically speaking. Acting on this sense of responsiblity requires taking into account a student's goals, background, and values. The teachers emphasized that it is inappropriate to impose predetermined notions of optimal development on those they serve. Only through careful listening and observation can one discern what truly matters to a person."
